Paramount prevent steel and copper thefts in Staffordshire

F Watson & Sons based in Stone, Staffordshire are one of the largest waste metal recyclers in the county, with a site area extending to some 8 acres.

The site collects waste metal from all over the county, and includes waste from private industry, private individuals and the Ministry of Defence. Much of the redundant military and army equipment ranging from vehicles to old aircraft parts are sent to the site for disposal.

F Watson & Sons trading for over 70 years is also a popular choice for many aircraft and vehicle restorers, seeking parts to restore old vintage and classic planes and vehicles.

The raw cost of material from steel and copper has soured to an all time high over the last two years, and is set to rise even further over the next 18 months. The high costs of new metals has seen scrap values at an all time high, with copper falling in at just under £4000 per tonne.

The high cost and limited traceability of most waste metal has made it a perfect choice for thief’s looking for a quick untraceable return.

Paramount have installed a monitored CCTV system to protect the entire site, based around 360 degree dome cameras, fitted with motion detection on the same tower to match key fields of view.

The new comprehensive system records locally on site, but also transmits images to Paramount’s Central Monitoring Station. Our operators monitor the site not only out of hours, but also during trading hours at random intervals, observing all areas of the site from a bird’s eye view.

In the event we observe suspicious activity on the site, our operator can speak live to the location over a loudspeaker and warn a potential thief that we are monitoring them.

Recording of the cameras is carried out locally on site, as well as at our central station whilst we view the site.

Since the installation of the system, theft has diminished to a small level; if it exists it is undetectable.
